It’s like a scene out of Major League. The young, unaccomplished pitcher in glasses takes the mound in an important situation. And he gets the job done.
But rather than Charlie Sheen playing the role of Rick “Wild Thing” Vaughn, it’s Vance Worley playing himself.
Worley has made two starts for the Phillies since Joe Blanton has been sidelined, and he has been great. He is 2-0 in those starts, sporting a miniscule ERA 0.75 and is averaging a strikeout an inning.
His success, though, shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The 23-year-old has spent much of his brief career in the minors, but had already made an impact in his minimal Major League experience.
Worley had two different stints with the Phillies last season. He made one relief appearance in July, closing out a 10-2 win against Colorado with a perfect 9th that included two strikeouts.
He was called up again in September when the roster expanded, and made his first major league start against the Marlins early that month. He took the loss, but turned in respectable debut performance, giving up 2 runs in 5 innings of work.
That would be the last run he’d give up all year.
He would go on to make three more appearances, two of them out of the bullpen. But in the penultimate game of the season, Charlie Manuel gave him the nod. He went 5 scoreless innings in a 7-0 win, but failed to get the decision only because the Phillies scored all their runs in 7th and beyond.
Worley had to feel good about the way his 2010 season came to a close, but after the Cliff Lee signing, there was no room for him on the 2011 Major League roster. So he began the year with AAA Lehigh Valley.
In 4 April starts, Worley continued to show that he deserves a shot on the Major League team. Though his ERA was a very good 2.78, his record sat only at 2-2. But he turned in a quality start in one of his losses and was one out short of doing the same in his other loss.
But with a starting rotation in Philadelphia as set as they come, Worley would have nowhere to be promoted. Enter Joe Blanton.
The number 5 starter had appeared in 4 games with mixed results. His first two starts were terrible, giving up 7 and 5 runs, respectively. He did settle down in his next two, however, going 7 innings and allowing 2 runs in each, lowering his ERA to 5.92.
Blanton has since gone on the disabled list and missed two starts with elbow trouble, therefore, opening the door to Worley.
But it appears Blanton is nearing his return. He has been playing catch and taking part in bullpen sessions and looks like he could be geared for a start on Monday, which most likely means Worley’s days in Philadelphia are numbered. At least for now.
Despite his early struggles, Blanton’s job was never really in trouble. During his 2+ years in Philadelphia, he’s been fairly reliable. He’s given the team more than 175 innings in each of his full seasons and has a 25-15 career record with them.
Aside from his performance, though, another thing keeping him in the rotation is his salary. Blanton is still owed $17m over these next two seasons. That is a lot of money to have tied up in someone who would be relegated to bullpen/spot start duty.
If nothing else, though, Worley’s emergence shows just how deep this team is. Every manager would love to keep his opening day roster intact all season, assuming the players are performing. But when speed bumps, like trips to the disabled list arise, it’s comforting to know there is someone waiting in the wings who can more than capably fill the void.
Following his latest start, Worley said, “Some things are going my way. I just want to stick around as long as I can.”
Unfortunately for him, at this time, he most likely won’t be sticking around for much longer. But it’s a long season. And when, and if, he should be called upon again, the Phillies can rest assured that he will be ready and able.
