Fantasy Baseball: Preseason Top 100 26-50

Monday, March 12th, 2012

My preseason top 100 rankings continue to grow this week with its third installment featuring many players that have injury concerns and breakout seasons from a year ago. The players that are being revealed today are ones that may be undervalued or overvalued by some but might make or break a fantasy roster. Again, these rankings are a personal opinion and comments and questions are encouraged. If you missed the top 25, follow the links below.

1-10 11-25

  1. Curtis Granderson, OF (NYY)–Batting average keeps him outside of the top 25, but 30 home runs and 20 stolen bases is definitely attainable.
  2. Mark Teixiera, 1B (NYY)–His batting average has dropped each of the last four seasons, but 39 home runs in 2011 keeps him just outside of the second-round.
  3. Clayton Kershaw, SP (LAA)–Kershaw has improved in each of his three full seasons in the majors, but the lack of run support keep him from getting any higher.
  4. Josh Hamilton, OF (TEX)–Had a solid follow up year last season to his 2010 breakout season in 2010, but 2011 should be more of his baseline.
  5. Felix Hernandez, SP (SEA)–Like Kershaw, if he was on a different team he would be inside the top 20.
  6. Ryan Zimmerman, 3B (WAS)–Suffered a torn abdominal muscle that cost him two months in 2011, but should return to his 2009 form if fully healthy.
  7. Matt Holliday, OF (STL)–Battled injuries on and off in 2011, but 25 home runs and 100 RBIs is a nice baseline for him.
  8. Tim Lincecum, SF (SP)–Finished 2011 with a 13-14 record, but finished 200+ innings and 200+ strikeouts for the fourth season in a row with no signs of slowing down.
  9. Cole Hamels, SP (PHI)–Hamels gets to face off against No. 3 pitchers with Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee ahead of him in the rotation, which gives him plenty of value in this position.
  10. Pablo Sandoval, 3B (SF)–Returned back to elite level in 2011 after a dismal 2010 campaign, which shows good signs of things to come.
  11. Dan Uggla, 2B (ATL)–Forget the first half slump in 2011 especially since he still set a career-high in home runs with 36.
  12. Hunter Pence, OF (PHI)–Should be hitting in the clean-up role for the Phillies in 2012 while they wait for Ryan Howard to return from injury.
  13. Zack Greinke, SP (MIL)–Bounced back from a poor 2010 campaign last season and still has the ability to repeat 2009.
  14. Michael Bourn, OF (ATL)–Bourn was finally able to bring his batting average up in 2011 and if he can keep it around the same level this season his stolen base total may be even higher this year.
  15. Carl Crawford, OF (BOS)–Crawford struggled in his first season with the Red Sox, but expect him to settle down and adapt to his role in 2012 and return solid fantasy production.
  16. Jay Bruce, OF (CIN)–Bruce has now increased his home run total three seasons in a row and if the batting average climbs in 2012 he could be a steal at this spot.
  17. Jered Weaver, SP (LAA)–I have a hard time thinking 2011 first half is repeatable, but his season 2010 isn’t a bad baseline.
  18. Nelson Cruz, OF (TEX)–His speed has declined three years in a row and he just can’t seem to stay healthy but still an elite player at his position when he is not injured.
  19. Starlin Castro, SS (CHC)–His first full season with the Cubs was a great sign of things to come so let’s hope he doesn’t suffer a sophomore slump.
  20. Brandon Phillips, 2B (CIN)–Some say consistency is king, and if you believe that than Phillips is the purest model in the fantasy world.
  21. Eric Hosmer, 1B (KC)–Great rookie season in 2011 and still has plenty of room to grow.
  22. Asdrubal Cabrera, SS (CLE)–The 2011 power came out of nowhere and will be hard to repeat, but still even two-thirds of the power would be a great investment at his position.
  23. Mike Napoli, C (TEX)–The power was always there, but was given full-time at-bats in 2011 and set career-highs in home runs, RBIs and batting average and should be a lock to finish atop the catcher rankings again this season.
  24. Dan Haren, SP (LAA)–Settled down a bit in his first full season with the Angels and is always a solid fantasy pitcher in terms of strikeouts, wins and ERA.
  25. Paul Konerko, 1B (CWS)–The last two seasons Konerko was able to turn the clocks back to his prime years, but at the age of 36 can he do it again? I think so.

Be sure to check back in the upcoming days as I finish off my preseason top 100 rankings!

Another Day of Disappointing Offense

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

The Giants lost to the hated Dodgers 1-0 Wednesday as Tim Lincecum fell in a classic pitchers duel to Clayton Kershaw. “You knew it was going to be a close game, a tough game,” said Lincecum. “I flinched first.” That flinch was a fastball that he left out over the plate that Dioner Navarro bashed into McCovey Cove. The loss dropped Lincecum to 0-4 against pitchers with the name of Clayton this season (Kershaw, Mortensen and Richard). Against everyone else Lincecum is 8-4. However, The Freak is back in rare form as he has posted a 1.66 ERA, 10.7 K/9 mark an a 1.13 WHIP over his last six starts. Unfortunately, because of a lack of run support, he’s just 3-2 in those six outings. For some further proof of how unlucky Lincecum has been this year consider the following; in 21 starts this season the Giants have been held scoreless while he was on the hill eight times. That means in 38 percent of his starts this season even if Lincecum pitched a shutout he wouldn’t have emerged with a victory.

Speaking of Kershaw… he lowered his ERA against the Giants to 1.41. That’s the lowest of any pitcher against the Giants, minimum 50 innings pitched, in their 54 year history in San Francisco.

Despite the loss, the Giants still maintain a 4.5 game lead over second place Arizona, with the Rockies in third place 9.5 games back. The D’backs suffered a major loss on Wednesday when Stephen Drew suffered a broken ankle that could force him to miss the rest of the season. Things are looking up for the Giants in terms of their positioning in the NL West, but they still must to something to address their pitiful offense that continues to limp along.

Brandon Belt got another start Wednesday after hitting a homer and driving in three runs in his first game in the bigs since May 31st. Coming back from a broken wrist, Belt appears ready to contribute once again. The question is – where will he play? The team continues to say that Aubrey Huff’s back situation is only a minor issue, and that he should be back soon (i.e. it appears that the club is expecting him back some time this weekend). Would the Giants be better served to go with the younger Belt and send the season long struggler, Huff, to the bench? It’s only one number, and there’s a hell of a lot more that goes into analysis than just one number, but Belt’s homer the other night at home equaled the number of times that Huff has gone deep at home this year. Huff has 166 at-bats in San Francisco while Belt has 27. Moreover, when you compare Huff’s work this season to the other full-time first sackers in the NL only one, James Loney, has a worse OPS. Just some food for thought.

NOTES

Jeff Keppinger’s plane was delayed on his way to San Francisco. As a result, he didn’t arrive in time to start the game but he did enter in the 7th inning. He should be in the starting lineup on Friday.

Jonathan Sanchez is scheduled to start Friday at Triple-A Fresno. Depending on how he pitches he may or may not make another start in the minors. For now, Barry Zito is still slated to start next week against the Phillies.

Pablo Sandoval (quad) should be ready to return to action Friday for the Giants.
