Mike Napoli was diagnosed with avascular necrosis during his pre-signing physical with the Red Sox. It’s a disease brought on by poor blood supply that can kill cells in bone tissue. Napoli doesn’t have any symptoms currently and should be fine going forward.

This was a surprise to the 31-year-old as he reportedly played through the disease and hit 24 home runs for the Rangers in 2012. Napoli has crushed at least 20 home runs for five consecutive years. The Red Sox plan to utilize him as their first baseman, so this could assist him in his health in 2013.
